African Cycling Revelation: Tshenolo Pro Team & Reinardt Janse van Rensburg's Mentorship (2026)

A thrilling journey awaits! The rise of African cycling is about to reach new heights with the emergence of the Tshenolo Pro Cycling Team.

On a fateful January morning, a simple buzz and ping on a phone in Pretoria marked a momentous occasion. Thabiso Rengane, the team manager, received the news that their hard work had paid off - the UCI had granted them a Continental license for the 2026 season. It was a dream come true, and the team's success story began to unfold.

Thabiso's journey has been nothing short of remarkable. When I last saw him at the Tour of Benin, their team's first UCI race, they dominated the event. Comparing that experience to receiving the UCI confirmation, Thabiso shared, "Both moments were immense, representing huge achievements. Winning our first UCI race was exhilarating, but getting the green light from the UCI felt equally powerful. It's a massive leap forward."

But here's where it gets controversial... The team's name, 'Tshenolo,' means 'revelation' in Setswana, a local Bantu language. Malusi Molewa, the founder, believes it's time to compete at a higher level, driven by the hunger of their riders. "It's their passion that will take us places," he says. And this is the part most people miss - it's not just about the riders; it's about the entire team's dedication.

Enter Reinardt Janse van Rensburg, a former WorldTour pro with an impressive resume, including nine Grand Tour starts. At 37, he thought his racing days were over, but joining Tshenolo with their new license felt like a fresh start. "It's about reigniting that raw passion and mentoring the next generation," he says. "I want to prove that experience matters in a sport often dominated by youth."

Janse van Rensburg brings a wealth of knowledge and skills to the team. "Reading the wind, positioning in sprints, conserving energy - these are the nuances I can teach," he explains. Alongside him are experienced riders like Thokozani Mahlangu and Brandon Downes, the 2025 African Continental ITT Champion.

But it's not just about the veterans. The team also boasts seven talented riders under 25, including Rodney Masemola, who dreams of competing at the highest level and learning from the best. "I want to improve my explosiveness and sustain higher power output," he says, eager to make his mark.

And the story gets even more exciting! Tshenolo is committed to women's cycling, with plans to launch a Continental women's team in 2027. They've already signed some impressive talent, including Lucy Young, the 2025 African ITT Continental Champion. Lucy believes this is a massive step forward for women's cycling in South Africa, inspiring riders across Africa.

Thabiso Rengane has a clear vision for the team's future. "We want to conquer Africa and establish TPCT as the top cycling team on the continent. Our focus is on UCI races across Africa and, to a lesser extent, Asia. We also plan to challenge ourselves in Europe, including the Tour of Rhodes."

With over 140 African riders racing on WorldTour, Pro, and Continental Teams in 2025, twice as many as in the USA, the future of African cycling looks bright. Tshenolo's arrival on the scene brings new opportunities, and the sport continues to thrive.

So, what do you think? Is this a revelation for African cycling? Are you excited to see what Tshenolo achieves? Let's discuss in the comments!
