Measles Outbreak Alert: Snohomish County Reports 3 Cases in Unvaccinated Children (2026)

An alarming measles outbreak has been officially declared in Snohomish County following the confirmation of three local children testing positive for the disease. This situation has raised significant concerns among health officials as the virus begins to circulate within the community.

The affected children, all of whom were unvaccinated, were reportedly exposed to a family visiting from South Carolina. After showing symptoms such as fever, cough, and a rash typical of measles, these children tested positive on January 14.

In response to these cases, the Snohomish County Health Department promptly informed the school district about the confirmed instances at Serene Lake Elementary School and Pathfinder Kindergarten Center. As a precautionary measure, both schools will be closed on Thursday, January 16, allowing health officials to strategize their next steps effectively.

It's crucial to understand that measles is exceptionally contagious and can spread even before symptoms manifest and a rash appears. The virus can linger in the air for up to two hours after an infected person has vacated a space, which poses a significant risk to those nearby.

The health department has identified several public locations where the infected children were present prior to their diagnosis. Individuals who were at these locations during the specified times may have been exposed:
* January 9, 8:30 a.m.–5:15 p.m. — Pathfinder Kindergarten Center, 11401 Beverly Park Road, Everett
* January 9, 8:30 a.m.–5:15 p.m. — Serene Lake Elementary School, 9401 Sharon Drive, Everett
* January 13, 1:10–3:10 p.m. — Swedish Mill Creek Campus medical facility, 13020 Meridian Ave. S., Everett

These times include a two-hour window post-visit when the measles virus could still be airborne, raising further alarm.

"We anticipate more cases of measles as a result of the previous exposures and these new outbreak instances," stated Dr. James Lewis, Snohomish County Health Officer. He added, "Unfortunately, there are likely additional cases in our community that remain unidentified."

Officials received notice last week, along with Public Health – Seattle & King County, that during their stay in King and Snohomish counties from December 27 through January 1, three members of the South Carolina family, including one adult and two children, were contagious with measles.

During their visit, this family frequented various locations across Everett, Marysville, and Mukilteo, traveled through Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, and even visited a car rental facility nearby.

Health officials are advising families and staff to keep an eye out for any symptoms related to measles and to reach out to a healthcare provider if they have any concerns.

Kim Van Pelt, the Health Department Director, expressed her worries, stating, "We are deeply concerned about the health and safety of children in Snohomish County. Measles is a serious illness that can lead to severe complications, including brain swelling and, in rare cases, death."

Upon confirming a measles case, the Snohomish Health Department mandates that proof of immunity be provided by all staff, students, and visitors in affected schools. Acceptable forms of proof include documentation showing a birth date prior to 1957, records of two doses of a live measles vaccine administered by a licensed healthcare professional, a signed letter from a qualified healthcare provider confirming a previous measles infection and subsequent recovery, or laboratory evidence proving immunity through blood tests or serology.
