Victoria Faces Extreme Heatwave: Temperatures to Soar Above 48°C (2026)

Prepare yourselves, Victoria! We're staring down the barrel of a potentially record-shattering heatwave that could push temperatures to a scorching 48 degrees Celsius. Yes, you read that right – 48! But here's where it gets controversial... some are saying this is just another hot summer, while others are calling it a clear sign of a rapidly changing climate. What do you think? Let us know in the comments!

Next week, parts of northern Victoria are bracing for temperatures that could break all-time maximum records. While the peak intensity is expected on Tuesday, with at least one town potentially hitting that blistering 48-degree mark, the heat will be building from this Saturday. So, Victorians should prepare for several days of intense heat.

The Bureau of Meteorology's Kevin Parkin explains that hot, dry continental winds are the culprit, driving up temperatures and significantly increasing the risk of bushfires across the state. "A dome of heat is expected to sit over Victoria, not just this weekend but persisting well into next week," he warned. "We're looking at many centres cracking 40 degrees, including Ouyen with 48 degrees on Tuesday. Many centres are probably going to approach their all-time maximum records. This is quite a significant day."

While some relief is expected in southern Victoria with cool changes on Sunday and again on Tuesday evening, the northern regions might not be so lucky. Prepare for a solid week of sweltering heat. "It's not good news for the north," Mr. Parkin stated bluntly. "This could easily be four, five, six, seven days of 40-plus degree temperatures inland."

And this is the part most people miss: there's no significant rainfall in the forecast for the next two weeks. This prolonged dry spell, coupled with the extreme heat, creates a perfect storm for bushfires.

Just two weeks ago, devastating bushfires, fueled by catastrophic conditions, ripped through over 400,000 hectares of Victoria. The Country Fire Authority's Jason Heffernan is understandably concerned. The upcoming heatwave will undoubtedly increase fire danger, especially in the western and south-western parts of the state.

Thankfully, wind speeds are not predicted to be as high as they were during those earlier fires. "Whilst we're not currently forecasting or predicting catastrophic conditions, we are well and truly into extreme conditions across multiple days," Mr. Heffernan clarified. An extreme fire danger rating is already in place for the Wimmera and South West fire districts on Saturday. Total fire bans are expected to be declared soon, and Mr. Heffernan is urging all Victorians to avoid using fire during this period.

Victoria is still reeling from the recent fires, which have destroyed over 1,500 structures, including at least 434 homes, and claimed the lives of more than 35,000 livestock. Three fires are still burning out of control in eastern Victoria, near Dargo, Walwa, and Mallacoota. But remember, even seemingly contained fires can reignite under these conditions.

"The fuels across Victoria have been baking now for a while," Mr. Heffernan explained. "With the next couple of days of heatwave conditions, particularly those very hot days, we are expecting to see internal fire and pockets of unburnt fuel reignite or flare up." Residents near the Longwood fire in central Victoria are being urged to be particularly vigilant.

So, what does all this mean for you? It means staying informed, being prepared, and taking extra precautions to protect yourself, your family, and your community. Are these extreme weather events becoming the new normal? Is enough being done to prevent and manage bushfires? Share your thoughts and concerns in the comments below. We want to hear from you!
